It's not just about price anymore...

Getting Started - When looking for a Internet Service Provider (ISP), the first thing you need to ask yourself is "How am I going to use the Internet?"  If you are a user with a single PC looking to send and receive emails, connect from time-to-time for short periods, & do general research then dial-up will probably work great for you.  If you are a media guru looking to download music and movies, play online games, share photos, or have multiple PC's then you should look into a broadband connection.

Speed - There is no denying a speed difference between dial-up and broadband (dsl/cable) exists.  This analogy should help explain the difference.  Think of dial-up as a garden hose and broadband as a fire hose.  To help offset speed differences most dial-up providers offer accelerated/high-speed dial-up.  This technology can help speed up your browsing by 5 - 7 times.

Acceleration - Speeds up the delivery of web pages using compression, caching, persistent connections, and optional content filtering.

What gets accelerated?

  • Web pages – HTML markup and JavaScript
  • Graphics including JPEG and GIF images
  • All Text
  • Email on the web

What will not be accelerated?

  • Streaming media, audio and video files
  • Secure pages, such as those used for online banking and credit card forms
  • Files and attachments such as music or digital photos

Connectivity - One major difference when comparing DSL and Dial-up is the connection piece.  Since most people share the phone line used to make voice calls with their Internet connection; dial-up requires you to connect to the Internet each time you want to send email or surf.  DSL also uses your existing phone line but on a different frequency allowing you to make and receive phone calls while your connected the the Internet.

Price - Speed and convenience come at a price.  While the price for broadband and dial-up is close you can still save close to $100/yearly by choosing a dial-up connection for your Internet needs.

  • Broadband connections range from $14.95 to $39.95 and require hardware installation at your home.
  • Dial-up connections range from $7.95 to $15.95 and you can usually find promotional pricing for the first few months in the $1 range.
